Vincent And The Radio

Tomorrow, Saturday the 14th is a busy day for our community. At 8am, we're going to meet at the St. Vincent de Paul Society's drop-in centre to assist with breakfast. After that, at 1pm, the Smokestacks And The Sunrise band will be featured on Mike Sikorski's radio show on CFUR 88.7fm. The show will repeat at 5pm on Sunday afternoon. Be sure to tune in.

On Saturday, we had our latest Smokestacks and the Sunrise gathering. Even though the cute, bearded boy who usually does the announcements wasn't there, it was still awesome. Ben, Eli and Dave wrote a new song, that rocked. And I mean rocked. It was like Carlos Santana was in the house. Also, the room was packed. There was nary a spare chair at the tables (I've always wanted to say 'nary').

The message was on resurrection and hope, with a great audio message from Breakforth by some old guy (Brennan Manning) who turned out to be full of youthful wisdom and humour. Accompanying this were pictures done by Ida Mae. They were lovely, and fitting. They represented how our lives can be broken, messed up, and battered, but also beautiful. They showed that things don't have to perfect to be beautiful and loved, and neither do we. Jesus loves us completely already, and has given us everything, if we could only accept it and stop thinking that we have to be perfect first.

Out Of The Darkness

Although the weather we're getting doesn't look (or feel) much like spring, April is already upon us. Join us this Saturday for the apex of our year together so far, as we reflect on the hope of the resurrection. Featured will be the photography of our very own Ida-Mae Knox. Also, listen on Friday and Saturday for radio ads that will be featured on the X and The Wolf FM. See you Saturday!!

SATS Six Summary

The gathering last night went well. Attendance was somewhat swollen, and the age range was wider than average, which we welcome. The band played new material; Andrea Brown presented a video of a dance-project she had made; the hearing scripture segment was a bit different as there were seven readers; and I ate five Rice Krispies squares (cubes really, who are we kidding?). All in all, it was all good.

The focus of the night was creation and the environment. This was reflected in Andrea’s presentation, the choice of scripture (Genesis 1), and the movie clip that we watched. That clip was the trailer for “An Inconvenient Truth,” Al Gore’s Oscar-winning documentary about global warming. We will be showing the full movie on Saturday, March 17th @6:30pm. This is a profound film about what could be one of the defining issues of our generation—don’t miss it!

One more thing: a bunch of us will be volunteering down at the St. Vincent de Paul Society on April 14th @ 8am. If you would like to participate in this, or if you have any questions, please contact us at smokestacksandthesunrise@yahoo.ca.
