On M&Ms and Moving Forward

Flickr SLIDESHOW:

Last Saturday marked the first anniversary of Smokestacks and the Sunrise. We began on Thanksgiving last year, and this year the Thanksgiving theme was subtly changed. Our discussion did not downplay the importance of being thankful for what has been provided for us, but it focused more on reflecting upon what this wealth means to us, given that God has said he will provide abundantly for us. There were many new faces among those who turned out after the summer break, and there was even a bit of an international flavour with exchange students from China, South Korea and Germany. Overall our first year was one of encouraging progress. It was not without its challenges, but seldom are valuable goals easily attained. What’s important is that we have done much to carve out an identity; we’ve built a community; and we’ve eaten a lot of M&M cookies along the way! We hope to see more of all of you in year 2, starting with volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul’s next Saturday!

IN OUR HANDS

Join us Saturday night as we get together to relect on the promise of ABUNDANCE, discovering the gifts we already possess that are waiting to come alive! As always, there will be music, food and conversation.
What a great way to spend Thanksgiving Saturday: with friends.

October Poster

It's been a while, hasn't it? Our gatherings over the summer were a little less regular, but with our community arts night, BBQ, band concerts and fundraiser for the Huntington Society of Canada, we were still rockin and rollin... Above is the poster for our next gathering, which is coming up on October 6th; we will be taking a look at the promise of abundance and what it means to live as if we have enough stuff. As always, there will be music, food and plenty of conversation, which is always good on Thanksgiving weekend. Oh yeah... feel free to print off one or two of the posters for yourself and a friend. Or better yet, bring a friend.

Unplugged at the U

Last Monday night The SMOKESTACKS AND THE SUNRISE Band played a jolly unplugged set at the University's Wintergarden. Special guests included Ben Cheung ("Mr. Symphony") on the violin and Nathan Reinheimer on the bass. The set was warmly received by many who attended; the band had a great time...

UNBC Gig

The SMOKESTACKS AND THE SUNRISE Band will be playing an hour-long acoustic set up at the university tomorrow (Monday) night from 5:45pm on. Featured will be our friends Ben Cheung on violin and Nathan Reinheimer on bass. Should be a good night.

If it is sunny, the show will be on the lawn in between the two residences; if not, it'll be in the Wintergarden. See you there.

Huntington's Fundraiser

Last night was our fundraiser for Huntington Disease. Due to full page articles in both the Free Press and the Citizen, it was a packed house. Around 170 people came out to donate and learn about Huntington's Disease. Aside from raising awareness about this disease, we ended up raising $3000 for the Huntington Society of Canada through ticket sales and a silent auction.

It was a very, very fun night of fellowship and excellent entertainment done by talented artists in our church community. Performers included Andrea Brown, Casey Primus, Cliff Raphael, Bill Watt, Dan Watt, Ben Cheung, Laura Zeimer, The Smokestacks and the Sunrise Band, BJ Smith and myself. Thanks to everyone who donated time, energy, food, items for the silent auction, talent and money. It's such a blessing to have so many people support this cause. Thank you!
