Blanket Drive

Please call me at 250-649-0771 if you have extra blankets, sleeping bags or pillows that I can drop off at shelters in Prince George.

There are hundreds of people in Prince George who have no home, and many who may have some kind of shelter, but not enough warmth.

I will be designating one day a week that I can be home to receive donations, or go out to pick them up if you are unable to bring them to me.

The following shelters and organizations will be receiving your donations:

St. Vincent De Paul Society
AWAC (Advocates for Women and Children)
ASAP (Active Support Against Poverty)

X Marks the...

Election day is fast approaching, are you ready to vote? Come out this Thursday for an informal informational session with your favourite political junkie, Sarah Waters. Or she should be, if she's not. Just saying.

Party platforms and campaign promises by each of the major parties will be addressed in an entirely objective manner, so of course it will be an evening of EXCITEMENT, HILARITY and SCANDAL!

If you're not sure who to vote for, why you need to vote or what this all is about something called democracy, come out on Thursday. If you don't learn anything, it'll at least make for a good story.

Things to do about the Food Crisis

Send an email to your MP. Bill C-33 requires that more ethanol (usually made from corn) be added to gasoline. This drives the price of corn higher, making it harder for people to afford food. Corn ethanol also is not a viable alternative to gasoline. To ask your MP to vote against this bill, click here. Copy the written passage, then click on the link at the top to get your MP's email address. Super simple.

Want a fun and easy way to send rice to starving people? Try this game. Warning: it's addictive.

Prince George Homeless Count 2008

Sarah passed on the following information about the Prince George Homeless Count 2008 (If you're interested in attending with someone from SATS, email us at: smokestacksandthesunrise@yahoo.ca):

"On May 25th and 26th CPAH (Community Partners Addressing Homelessness) will be conducting the first ever homeless count in Prince George. This will help us more fully comprehend the scope of homelessness and will enable us to capture a snapshot of the size and composition of our visible homeless population.

This count will take place within a 24 hour period, from 6:00pm Sunday- 6:00pm Monday. We are currently seeking volunteers to help out within this time frame.

There are many ways someone would be able to volunteer with this project:
- Outdoor surveying – to work in pairs walking set areas of the downtown and a few park or camping areas to survey people who may not have accessed a Shelter. Outdoor surveys will be done during the daylight hours early Monday morning for no more than 3 hours.
- Serve special meals - to help with a breakfast on the Monday at the Native Friendship Centre.
- Surveying at agencies – some agencies may require assistance with conducting surveys.
- At the count headquarters AWAC (Association Advocating for Women and Children) - to help with distribution of supplies for the volunteers, have access to a vehicle in order to do checks on the street volunteers, and to answer phones for when street volunteers call in.

If you are interested in helping us out please attend the information and orientation night at
the College of New Caledonia on May 20th (Tuesday) from 6:30pm-9:30pm in Room 1-308A/B.

It is important to attend this night. However, if you are unable - we will be reviewing the
information before the count on Sunday the 25th at AWAC.

Hope to see you Tuesday!
For more information you can contact:
Shirley Rushton at 562-6262 local 226 or Kerry Pateman at

Claw Hands

One particularly un-springish Sunday, five brave souls embarked on a mission of restoration in their community. Intrigued? Keep reading.

The city of Prince George staged a spring city clean up where the municipal powers provided motivated citizens with bags and gloves to clean up their neighbourhoods, streets, parks and any other area one might find litter. Laziness on the city's part, you might assume, but no, this was an event meant to allow its residents to participate and contribute to the beautification and amelioration of their surroundings. So, five of us Stackers ventured out on a sunny yet frigid day to clean up a park near Carney Hill Elementary.

If you look hard enough, you can see Ben in the far off distance working around the players' bench, learning the difference between a syringe and a vial.

Travis and Amy scouring the ground...

London Drugs' high-security secret cart storage. Not very secure looking, you might be thinking. Wrong-o. That is ice they are sitting in, and they weren't going anywhere until summer.

The bounty of my own treasure hunt. Part of an exhaust system and a potential murder weapon. It was so great of a find it was too good to be picked up for garbage apparently.

It was a great morning, though I think it took about 3 days for feeling to come back into my fingers. However I think we can all agree the result was well worth having claw hands for a few days.

Thanks for the Earth Day contribution Sarah.

The BETTER Part

There can be a lot of cynicism when you talk about a campaign like Make Poverty History...

"It's all hype" someone will say.
"A white band isn't going to save the world".

Well, we now have something to point to...
A step in a hopeful direction.

The Canadian government has just passed into law the BETTER AID bill that the Make Poverty History campaign has been pushing for.

This is a time to CELEBRATE; and with that, a time to THANK those in government who responded to the public pressure.

While it is crucial that we tell our leaders when things need to change, it is also very important to tell our leaders when they've done something right.

Please follow this link if you would like to thank Canada's leaders for listening to us on this key issue:

A Year In Review

We are pumped for our upcoming SATS event (poster shown above) called "A YEAR IN THE LIFE: looking back on the past season of SATS". As with all of our get-togethers, there will be great music, friendly discussion and tasty treats. This particular evening will feature various different voices from the SATS community commenting on how the topics we've engaged with have affected them personally, and as a group. As well, The SATS Band will perform songs they've written that relate to the various topics.

So come on out, it'll be great time together.

Cafe Voltaire

Last night was The SATS Band's first full gig at Cafe Voltaire. The band was tight and the harmonies were smooth and organic. It was a thing of beauty. Everyone was in top form. The acoustic cafe setting really complimented the songs and was a natural fit for the band. They played for almost 2 hours, with the evening gently fading into night behind them. They did all of their songs off the EP, as well as some rocking covers, like Feist's I Feel It All, John Mayer's Waiting on the World to Change, and the Beatles' Can't Buy Me Love. The crowd loved them and I can't wait for their next acoustic gig.

Also, we have a message from Sarah Waters regarding the annual Spring City Hall Cleanup:

"HEY! I'm going to sign a group up at city hall on my lunch break on Friday, so if you want to have FUN and pick up garbage to keep our city glowing, let me know before then!
Team Spic and Span will be getting to work Sunday at 11, and if there's a neighbourhood you especially would like to see scoured, let me know that too.

Previously Hidden Talent

Well, the Smokestacks and the Sunrise CD Release Party/Art Show on Saturday was a huge success! There was inspiring, beautiful poetry, amazing art and of course great music! What a talented bunch of people. It was so great to see so much previously hidden talent. Who knew there are so many fantastic artists in the SATS community? Thank you to everyone who shared their gifts!

I asked my 9 year old what her favorite part of the evening was. She said, "the songs." I think a lot of folks would agree. The SATS band was great live (as always) and their CD (for the bargain price of only $7!) is very professionally done. It's going to be a new in-the-van fav'.

And as always there were tasty treats... Hooray for apple crisp and ice cream and chocolate cake!

It was great to see such support for the band and the SATS community! Thanks to all the "regulars" and to all the new faces. It was so great to have the chance to connect.

Can't wait to see what next month brings!

Peace, Joy, Love to all,

L.L. Penson

The Marriage of Environmentalism and Christianity

Saturday night's gathering was great. Lots of people, lots of conversation and a great topic. We addressed the issue of the environment and how environmentalism is linked to Christianity in many ways. First, God entrusted us to care for the world and all of its creatures and plants, he didn't tell us to decimate it. Second, God cares about the flowers and the animals and, since we're made in His image, that means that we should care about the environment too. Third, nature is God's creation, so by exploiting and damaging it, we are not respecting God, and we are placing our wants before God's. Fourth, most environmental problems have huge negative impacts on the poor in the world. We see this directly with global warming, which has caused droughts, violent storms, fires, and water scarcity which has led to unnecessary death and hardships for millions. Since God has commanded us to care for the poor, one of the ways we can do this is by addressing the environmental causes that are the root of their poverty and that cause much suffering. What we do as individuals adds to the problems. We must all take steps to reduce our impact on the world and the suffering of those who aren't as fortunate as us.

Empowered, Not Disheartened

Saturday night saw us learning about and discussing the topic of human trafficking. This is a subject that most of us know very little about and, due to its dark and depressing nature, we tend to shield ourselves from thinking about it. Andrea gave a great presentation about what human trafficking is and how we can actually do something about it. Afterward, we had a great group discussion about how we can go about addressing this issue and in what ways we can help. The consensus was that education about this issue is of the utmost importance, since few people know much about it. We also talked about how it is necessary to lobby our politicians so that human trafficking is at least as severely punished as drug trafficking. We also talked about how prayer is a very important aspect. Shirley suggested that each of us should pray for the victims of human trafficking and the sex trade whenever we come across an advertisement for pornography, since many of the women involved in the porn industry have not chosen to be a part of it, but have been coerced. Finally, we acknowledged that poverty is one of the causes of this problem, since it is usually poor women who are exploited. Since poverty is one of the root causes, by focusing on eliminating poverty, we will also help save men, women and children from becoming victims of human trafficking.

Overall, the discussion left us feeling empowered, not disheartened, about what we as individuals can do about this issue. Like William Wilberforce, the man who convinced the British government to abolish the slave trade, we should not forget about what is going on around us and we should remain committed to helping these exploited individuals receive justice.

Thanks to Roxanne for the recap.

The Salvation Army and Human Trafficking

As mentioned at last's night's get-together, the Salvation Army has been leading the way in addressing the issue of human trafficking from a Christian perspective.

A Possible Response

This past month, S.A.T.S. looked at the current state of the world in terms of poverty and the inequity that exists between the rich and the poor nations. We looked at the importance of moving from acts of charity to justice. i.e. Not solely administering aid to the needy (charity), but working on changing the conditions which lead to people being in need (justice). We looked at the U.N.’s response in terms of the Millennium Development Goals, and the subsequent call to action in 2005 by groups such as Make Poverty History and the Micah Challenge to encourage world leaders to reach these goals by 2015.

We looked at the words of:

Martin Luther King Jr.: “The curse of poverty has no justification in our age…. The time has come for us to civilize ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolition of poverty."

Nelson Mandela: “Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings… overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice.”

Proverbs 31:8-9: "Speak up for the people who have no voice, For the rights of all the down-and-outers. Speak out for justice! Stand up for the poor and destitute!”

8 Millennium Development Goals
1. ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY AND HUNGER.
2. ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION.
3. PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN.
4. REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY.
5. IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH.
6. COMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES.
7. ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY.
8. DEVELOP A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT.

The U.N.: “We will spare no effort to free our fellow men, women, and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty, to which more than a billion of them are now subjected.”

Steve Bradbury, Co-Chair of Micah Network: “What makes these goals so remarkable is their clear commitment to a timetable. The development community, and all who are committed to working for a more just and compassionate world, can and must use these goals to hold our leaders accountable and insist that they fulfill their promises. If we fail in this, the MDGs will undoubtedly go the way of many other “commitments” to end poverty – another set of broken promises to the poor, another tragic joke at their expense."

Micah 6:8: “He has showed you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Bishop Untener: “We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something and to do it very well.”

We discussed the following ideas regarding a possible response to these issues:
• Take one MDG a week and pray about it
Join the Micah Challenge Prayer series at: http://www.micahchallenge.org/
Learn from the MAKE POVERTY HISTORY & Micah Challenge websites
• Pick one MDG and do some research: www.un.org/millenniumgoals
Give 0.7% of your family's income every year to reduce global poverty
• Commit to buying Fair Trade, and if possible, local goods
• Meet regularly with others to discuss current issues from a faith perspective
Brainstorm ideas and discuss ways of working together
Talk about global poverty with others
Wear the White Band
SIGN ON to both campaigns, by visiting their respective websites:

Encourage actions that support the Millennium Development Goals .ie. to buy fair trade coffee for church functions; to stop using styrofoam dishes and cups; etc.
Talk to your MLA and MP about poverty-related issues - ie. write a letter or email
Encourage church members to sign the Micah call.
Write an article for your church bulletin or local/school newspaper

A Great Start to a New Year

The first SATS gathering of the New Year was incredible. We had the largest attendance in SATS history, many of whom were new to the SATS community. We talked about poverty, both local and global, and how we, as Christians, are obligated to do something about the injustices that exist in our world. Maureen Morgan gave a great, interesting and informative presentation about poverty, charity vs. justice, and the Make Poverty History and Micah Challenge campaigns. After her presentation, we had a group discussion about the issues addressed. This is a new addition to SATS and I think it was great. We got to talk, ask questions and let the ideas really sink in. This kind of group dialog emphasizes that SATS is a community.

If you want to become further involved in our community and help alleviate poverty in our area, you are more than welcome to come to St. Vincent's on Sunday to help serve breakfast with us.

Also, don't forget about the movie night on Sat, Jan 19, when we'll be showing Amazing Grace. Showtime is 7pm.
